WestJet cancelled more than 300 flights on Monday, August 3, 2026, accounting for approximately 62% of its scheduled flights across Canada. Cirium data showed 16 additional cancellations on Tuesday, August 4, as of 11 a.m. ET, as the airline works to restore its network after a flight attendant strike.
Strike Halts WestJet Flights Across Canada
The strike began early Sunday morning, August 2, after WestJet and the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) Local 8125, representing about 4,400 flight attendants, failed to agree on a new contract. Contract negotiations in Calgary have been ongoing since January, focusing primarily on wage increases and claims of unpaid ground
work. The strike led WestJet to ground all flights across much of Canada.
Airline Recovery Underway Amid Continued Disruptions
WestJet reached a tentative agreement with CUPE Local 8125 early Monday, August 3, but full network restoration is still in progress. Ashley Tymko, WestJet spokesperson, stated, “WestJet is resuming operations and entering the recovery phase following a labour disruption.” She added, “Flights have begun to operate; however, the impacts of the disruption continue as the airline works to restore its network. Guests are encouraged to continue checking the status of their flights before heading to the airport.” WestJet grounded all flights across much of Canada during the
strike.
Passenger Options and Union Ratification Process
WestJet allowed passengers travelling between July 30 and August 4 a one-time change or cancellation without fees. The airline committed to refund or re-accommodate affected passengers as applicable. Passenger protection rules require WestJet to arrange alternate transportation if necessary. CUPE Local 8125 president Alia Hussain said flight attendants have 30 days to ratify the tentative agreement, which includes pay increases. She declined to provide further details until union members are briefed.
