Royal Caribbean International has postponed the Serenade of the Seas Alaska cruise initially scheduled to depart Vancouver on August 30, 2026. The delay extends the ship’s stay in Vancouver for mandatory maintenance, pushing the sailing to September 1, 2026, at 9:00 PM. This adjustment shortens the original seven-night itinerary to five nights while maintaining the original return date.

Revised Alaska Itinerary and Itinerary Cuts

Originally, Serenade of the Seas was set to call at four Alaska and British Columbia ports: Sitka, Juneau, Ketchikan, and Prince Rupert, with scenic cruising along the Inside Passage and Endicott Arm to Dawes Glacier. The updated itinerary drops Sitka, Juneau, and

the Endicott Arm to Dawes Glacier scenic segment, leaving only Ketchikan and Prince Rupert as port stops. The ship will sail through the Inside Passage twice, both northbound and southbound, retaining some coastal scenery but significantly reducing the cruise’s destinations.

Passenger Compensation and Refund Options

Passengers continuing with the shortened cruise will receive onboard credit equal to two days’ cruise fare per guest, usable for onboard amenities such as specialty dining and shore excursions. Additionally, they will receive future cruise credit matching two days’ fare per guest, applicable to bookings through September 1, 2027. Royal Caribbean offers full refunds without penalty to passengers who cancel,

plus a 25% future cruise credit based on the fare paid.

The cruise line will reimburse hotel expenses incurred due to the two-day delay, capped at $300 per stateroom per night for up to two nights ($600 per cabin total). Airfare change fees are reimbursed up to $200 per guest for domestic flights and $400 for international flights for all affected passengers, including cancellations.

Early Boarding While Docked

Passengers may board Serenade of the Seas on the original embarkation dates, August 30 or 31, using the vessel as a floating hotel while it remains docked during maintenance. However, early boarders cannot disembark or access

onboard shops and the casino due to immigration and regulatory restrictions. Select bars, lounges, dining facilities, and spa services will remain available, but limited entertainment is expected.

Background on Ship Maintenance and Prior Issues

Serenade of the Seas, a 90,090 gross ton vessel with capacity for approximately 2,490 passengers, is part of Royal Caribbean’s Radiance class and has been in service since 2003. The ship underwent refurbishment as part of fleet modernization efforts but requires ongoing maintenance to ensure operational safety. The required maintenance follows prior technical difficulties experienced during the 2025 Alaska season, including reduced speeds forcing itinerary changes.

The cruise line has not disclosed specifics

of the maintenance, which typically involves propulsion, navigation, or other critical systems. The extensive itinerary reduction combined with the two-day sailing delay represents a substantial operational adjustment triggering comprehensive passenger compensation.

Traveler Impact and Operational Adjustments

The two-day postponement reduces the cruise from seven to five nights, eliminates four originally scheduled destinations, and restricts early boarding passengers from disembarking or accessing certain ship services. Royal Caribbean adjusts prepaid packages and gratuities to the shortened itinerary, with prorated refunds if passengers continue. Passengers who cancel receive full refunds including prepaid purchases. Reimbursements for hotel and airfare changes mitigate additional costs resulting from the delay.

This change

underscores the ongoing need for critical ship maintenance to maintain safety and performance standards despite prior refurbishments. Royal Caribbean offers extensive measures to minimize disruption and provide financial relief to affected guests.
