The MSC Poesia cruise ship was detained by the US Coast Guard at PortMiami on or before November 3, 2026, resulting in the cancellation of the ship’s scheduled 11-night sailing. The voyage had been scheduled to depart PortMiami on November 1, 2026, and included planned stops in Jamaica, Colombia, Costa Rica, among other destinations.

Passenger Numbers and Ship Capacity

More than 2,000 guests were on board at the time of detainment. The MSC Poesia has a capacity of over 3,200 passengers and carries more than 1,000 crew members.

Inspection Findings and Regulatory Issues

The US Coast Guard’s Sector Miami commander, Capt. Frank Florio, stated the Coast Guard identified deficiencies with

systems onboard the vessel during an expanded inspection. MSC Cruises said these deficiencies relate to a regulatory matter that arose before departure and could not be resolved in time to set sail. The ship remains detained until all deficiencies are corrected and it is cleared for departure. The Coast Guard’s priority is the safety of passengers, crew, vessel, and environment.

Cruise Line Response and Passenger Assistance

MSC Cruises apologized to guests, stating, “We recognize how disappointing and frustrating this news is for our guests, and we sincerely apologize for the disruption to their holiday.” The cruise line is providing full refunds to passengers and assisting with

their return home. MSC Cruises confirmed it is cooperating fully with the authorities.

Capt. Florio added, “We identified deficiencies with systems on board the vessel that we are addressing with MSC… the ship will remain detained until the deficiencies are corrected and it is cleared for departure.” The US Coast Guard also said, “The Coast Guard is tasked with verifying safe and secure commerce. It is the Captain of the Port’s priority to ensure the safety of passengers, crew, the vessel, and the environment.”
