On November 2, 2026, Port Everglades CEO Joseph Morris announced plans for approximately $1.7 billion in cruise-related investments aimed at modernizing port infrastructure over the next 20 years.

Planned Infrastructure Upgrades at Port Everglades

The investment package includes cruise terminal modernization, reconstruction of an older terminal, enhancements to wharf and berthing facilities, upgraded passenger loading bridges, expanded parking garages, and roadway improvements. These projects are designed to support growing operational demands and improve the passenger experience at the Florida port, which is a key homeport for Caribbean cruises.

Drivers Behind the Investment Strategy

Morris explained that changing cruise itineraries—including the growth of private island destinations and an increase in shorter voyages—are

driving the need for faster vessel turnarounds. These trends have increased demand for efficient parking, improved passenger and traffic flow management at Port Everglades.

Port Everglades’ Service-Focused Approach

Joseph Morris, CEO and port director of Port Everglades, described the port as a landlord port focused on the service industry, stating, “We’re a landlord port, yes, but we are in the service industry.” He added, “At the end of the day, our business is about the ships. It’s about the relationships, it’s about the partnerships, and it’s about the friendships.” Morris emphasized that the port’s organizational culture and its proximity to the Caribbean are competitive

advantages.

Regional Positioning and Industry Collaboration

Port Everglades operates in close cooperation with the Florida-Caribbean Cruise Association (FCCA), a nonprofit trade organization representing cruise industry and destination interests. The investment announcement was made during an FCCA Leadership Series event, underscoring the partnership between the port and the cruise industry. Morris praised FCCA events for providing opportunities to network, saying, “Every FCCA event I’ve been to has provided for those opportunities to connect with like-minded people who have great energy and are excited and passionate about the cruise industry.”
