Cordelia Cruises announced its objective to position India among the top five global cruise markets by 2032, supported by current operations of two vessels, Cordelia Empress and Cordelia Sky, and the accelerated introduction of a third ship, Cordelia Sun. The announcement was made by Jurgen Bailom, President and CEO of Cordelia Cruises, during a press event held off Mumbai.

Expansion of Fleet and Itineraries Across Domestic and International Routes

The company currently operates Cordelia Empress and Cordelia Sky from Mumbai and Kochi, offering an expanding range of itineraries. These include domestic weekend sailings, cruises along the Indian coast such as Goa and Lakshadweep, and international routes to the Maldives and

Sri Lanka. Cordelia Cruises is increasing its presence in Lakshadweep by visiting three locations, up from one previously. The Cordelia Sun vessel is expected to join the fleet earlier than initially planned, enhancing capacity and route options.

India’s Position in Global Cruise Markets and Growth Potential

According to Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA) data for 2025, the United States leads global cruise source markets with 20.6 million passengers, followed by Germany (2.8 million), the UK and Ireland (2.5 million), Australia (1.45 million), and Canada (1.27 million). India does not feature among the top 10 source markets currently, highlighting significant room for market growth. The Indian cruise market remains nascent

but promising, with Cordelia Cruises aiming to capture the expanding demand.

Market Potential and Indian Consumer Base

Before the entry of Cordelia Cruises into domestic cruising, around 200,000 Indians annually took international cruises. The company has transported about one million passengers to date. Approximately 13-14 percent of India’s population, or about 200 million people, have the financial capacity to afford cruise travel domestically. India’s extensive coastline of roughly 12,000 kilometers offers considerable opportunities for cruise tourism expansion.

Operational Challenges and Profitability Amid Rising Fuel Costs

Fuel prices have doubled due to geopolitical tensions in West Asia and the Russia-Ukraine conflict, impacting operating costs and profitability. Despite this, Cordelia Cruises remains profitable but reported that

if fuel prices had remained at last year’s levels, profits would have been higher by Rs 40 crore. Cruise operators like Cordelia manage rising fuel expenses through strategic adjustments such as itinerary changes, reducing vessel speeds, and boosting operational efficiency.

Corporate Travel, Events, and International Tourist Strategy

Cordelia Cruises is increasingly deriving business from corporate travel, including meetings, incentives, conferences, exhibitions (MICE), and weddings. The company is focused on attracting international tourists by offering longer and more diverse itineraries beyond domestic waters, aiming to enhance international market penetration alongside domestic growth.

Executive Leadership Comments on Fleet and Market Ambitions

Jurgen Bailom confirmed Cordelia Cruises currently operates with two ships, Empress and Sky, with the third

ship, Cordelia Sun, arriving sooner than planned. He underscored the company’s strategy to expand further but noted that specific future plans cannot be disclosed due to securities regulations. Bailom highlighted the sizable Indian market potential, equating the 13-14 percent able to cruise to a segment five times larger than global ship capacity. He emphasized the company’s goal to reach the world’s top five cruise markets by 2032, drawing parallels to China’s cruise market growth before the COVID-19 pandemic.

Bailom addressed the fuel price challenges, acknowledging a 100 percent increase but stressing the company’s ability to adapt and maintain profitability. Operational

flexibility in cruising enables adjustments to mitigate fuel cost impacts. He also noted the expansion of destination offerings, including multiple visits to Lakshadweep as part of the company’s itinerary diversification.
