The U.S. Coast Guard detained the MSC Poesia cruise ship at PortMiami on November 1, 2026, leading to the cancellation of its scheduled 11-night voyage. MSC Cruises announced on November 3, 2026, that the cruise would not sail as planned due to unresolved regulatory issues identified during the detention.

Inspection and Detention Details

The detention resulted from an expanded inspection carried out by the Coast Guard’s Miami sector. Officials found deficiencies with systems aboard the vessel, which required correction before the ship could depart. Captain Frank Florio, commander of the Coast Guard Miami sector, stated that these deficiencies are being addressed in collaboration with

MSC Cruises.

Passenger Impact and Official Statements

At the time of detention, the MSC Poesia had more than 2,000 passengers on board. MSC Cruises confirmed the cancellation of the sailing after failing to resolve the regulatory matter in time. The cruise line issued full refunds to all passengers and is assisting with travel arrangements to return home. MSC Cruises apologized for the disruption, stating, “We recognize how disappointing and frustrating this news is for our guests, and we sincerely apologize for the disruption to their holiday.” The U.S. Coast Guard emphasized that the ship will remain detained until all deficiencies are corrected and cleared for

departure, underscoring their responsibility to ensure the safety of passengers, crew, the vessel, and the environment.

Ship Capacity and Operational Context

The MSC Poesia is a large vessel with the capacity to carry over 3,200 passengers and more than 1,000 crew members. Its scheduled 11-night cruise had planned stops at destinations including Jamaica, Colombia, and Costa Rica. The detention at PortMiami and subsequent cancellation interrupted these itineraries and impacted the ship’s operational schedule.
