Port Everglades CEO Joseph Morris announced on November 2, 2026, potential investments totaling $1.7 billion aimed at modernizing and expanding cruise port infrastructure over the next 20 years. The investments aim to improve passenger experience and strengthen Port Everglades’ position as a leading cruise homeport in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

Changing Cruise Itineraries Drive Demand for Upgrades

The planned investments respond to evolving cruise itineraries featuring increased stops at private island destinations and shorter voyages, resulting in more frequent vessel turnarounds. These changes increase parking demand and necessitate improved traffic flow management. Port Everglades benefits from its proximity to key Caribbean cruise destinations and a strong customer service

culture.

Scope of Infrastructure Improvements

The $1.7 billion package includes cruise terminal modernization, reconstruction of an older terminal, and improvements to wharf and berthing facilities. Upgrades to passenger loading bridges, construction of new parking garages, and roadway enhancements are also planned to accommodate growing passenger and traffic volumes.

Port Everglades as a Service Industry Participant

Joseph Morris described the port as “a landlord port, yes, but we are in the service industry.” He stated, “At the end of the day, our business is about the ships. It’s about the relationships, it’s about the partnerships, and it’s about the friendships.” Morris emphasized that the port’s organizational culture is a key competitive advantage

requiring infrastructure upgrades.

FCCA Leadership Series Highlights Industry Collaboration

The announcement was part of an interview published on October 30, 2026, between Morris and Florida-Caribbean Cruise Association (FCCA) President Adam Ceserano in the FCCA Leadership Series, a nonprofit trade organization created in 1972 representing cruise industry stakeholders. Morris noted, “Every FCCA event I’ve been to has provided for those opportunities to connect with like-minded people who have great energy and are excited and passionate about the cruise industry.” The series focuses on trends, operations, partnerships, and careers in the cruise sector.
