Royal Caribbean Group cancelled the Serenade of the Seas Alaska cruise on September 1, 2026, after passengers had boarded the ship in Vancouver, Canada. The original sailing was scheduled for August 30, 2026, but had already been delayed and shortened by about half roughly a week before departure due to itinerary adjustments.

Delays, Partial Access, and Final Cancellation

On September 1, passengers faced delayed immigration screening and departure procedures in Vancouver. Several venues onboard, including the casino, were closed during the wait, although much of the ship remained accessible. Passengers could disembark and explore Vancouver while awaiting updates. By that afternoon, Royal Caribbean announced the screening

delay, followed by a final announcement later that evening cancelling the entire voyage.

Guests were instructed to disembark by midnight on September 2, 2026. The abrupt cancellation came after an initial notification that portions of the Alaska itinerary would be dropped. No sailing occurred after boarding despite passenger check-in and clearance processes.

Passenger Impact and Alternative Arrangements

Arielle Anderson and her family boarded the ship in Vancouver but never set sail. Their original plan was a weeklong Alaska cruise, postponed from August 30 to September 1, with shortened destinations. The family had traveled from multiple U.S. locations, making last-minute cancellations complicated. Following the cancellation, they

rented a car and relocated to a vacation rental near Bellingham, Washington.

Passengers experienced significant disruption attempting to secure alternate flights and accommodations. Anderson noted the confusion and frustration onboard, with many guests gathering in ship common areas during the unsettled hours. The family chose to stay in an Airbnb, adjusting their plans after the cruise cancellation.

Royal Caribbean’s Official Response and Compensation

Royal Caribbean Group cited a mechanical issue requiring ongoing maintenance as the cause for cancelling the sailing. The cruise line stated, “To accommodate ongoing maintenance, we’ve had to cancel our sailing. We apologize to our guests for the inconvenience and have worked with

them to adjust their travel plans.”

The company offered affected passengers a full refund, future cruise credits equal to 100% of their fare, and reimbursement for flight change fees. The cruise line did not provide further details on the maintenance issue.

Context on Cruise Cancellation Post-Boarding

Cruise cancellations after passenger boarding are uncommon but occur in cases of mechanical defects, ship charters, or maintenance requirements like dry dock refurbishments. A similar incident took place in May 2026 when Disney Cruise Line cancelled a sailing due to mechanical problems after guests had boarded.
