Technical Problems and Repairs
The Serenade of the Seas experienced mechanical difficulties that delayed the departure and prevented the ship from sailing. Initially docked at Vancouver’s Canada Place cruise terminal, the vessel was subsequently moved to the Lynnterm terminal to undergo repairs. Alex Munro, spokesperson for the Port of
Vancouver, confirmed the ship was temporarily docked at Lynnterm for maintenance. These issues followed earlier engine problems the ship encountered in July 2025 that required a return to port and other technical difficulties in June 2025.
Passenger Impact and Reactions
The cancellation forced passengers to alter their travel plans, with some cancelling prior to boarding after schedule reductions were announced. During the docked period, travelers had limited access to onboard amenities; only selected bars were open, with shops and casinos closed. Several passengers expressed frustration online, citing disrupted celebrations and disappointment with the cruise line’s handling of the situation. Many scrambled to arrange alternative
transportation or accommodations after the cancellation.

A Royal Caribbean Group spokesperson stated, “To accommodate ongoing maintenance, we’ve had to cancel our sailing. We apologize to our guests for the inconvenience and have worked with them to adjust their travel plans.” The cruise line offered full refunds, future cruise credits equal to 100% of the fare, retention of onboard credits, and reimbursement for eligible flight-change fees. The spokesperson also confirmed that repairs were completed in time for the ship’s next scheduled sailing on September 6, 2026, adding, “Repairs have now been completed, and the ship is ready to welcome guests on
its next scheduled sailing.”

The canceled Alaska cruise itinerary included stops at Sitka, Juneau, Ketchikan, and Prince Rupert, departing from Vancouver, British Columbia. The Serenade of the Seas is a 961-foot ship with a passenger capacity of 2,143. The September 2026 sailing disruption affected nearly 80% of the ship’s maximum passenger capacity booked for the voyage.
