Royal Caribbean International has cancelled the Serenade of the Seas Alaska cruise originally scheduled to depart from Vancouver, British Columbia, on August 30, 2026, following an extended period of repair delays that prevented the ship from safely sailing.
The voyage, initially booking passengers for a seven-night itinerary, was rescheduled to depart on September 1, 2026 with a shortened five-night route that only included stops at Ketchikan, Alaska, and Prince Rupert, British Columbia. Prolonged technical difficulties forced further delays that ultimately led to full cancellation, with the cruise line announcing that passengers must disembark by 11:59 p.m. on September 2, 2026.
Approximately 2,143 passengers were aboard Serenade of the Seas during the repair period in Vancouver. Royal Caribbean is providing those affected with full refunds of their cruise fares and future cruise credits equal to 100% of the fare, valid for one year. Additional compensation includes reimbursement of flight change fees up to $200 USD for domestic and $400 USD for international travel. Complimentary Wi-Fi access was made available aboard the vessel to help passengers manage travel adjustments.

Notably, sister ship Radiance of the Seas experienced similar propulsion problems during the 2023 Alaska season.
Aging mechanical systems and the demanding navigation conditions of the Alaska cruise season contribute to the challenges faced by these vessels. The Radiance-class ships range from 22 to 25 years old and require increasingly intensive maintenance to operate safely in remote
and logistically difficult regions such as Alaska.
