Holland America Line revealed the newly redesigned Ocean Bar aboard the Oosterdam as part of the ship’s Evolution upgrades, the largest fleet update in the company’s 153-year history, announced on September 3, 2026.
Ocean Bar Redesign Details
The upgraded Ocean Bar features a reimagined layout designed to enhance guest connection with live performances through a new stage and refreshed lounge areas. The bar has been relocated strategically to improve sightlines and interaction with entertainment acts including regional soloists, pianists, Vivace Strings, and late-night cabaret shows. Custom furnishings incorporate leather accents and design motifs inspired by vintage travel trunks and luggage, blending Art Deco elegance
with nautical themes. Upholstery fabrics are made from recycled materials, reflecting a sustainability focus embedded in the transformation. The design draws on maritime heritage elements, notably from the ship Rotterdam V.
Oosterdam Itineraries and Evolution Program
Following its Fall 2027 drydock, the Oosterdam will resume service with eight itineraries spanning Europe, the Caribbean, and North America, offering 15 departure dates. The vessel is the first in Holland America’s Evolution upgrade program, which encompasses six ships in total. The Zuiderdam is scheduled as the second ship to undergo similar enhancements, both set to receive new bandstands at their Lido Pools as part of these renovations.
Executive Statement on Design Goals
Michael
Stendebach, Holland America Line’s senior vice president of food, beverage and rooms division, commented on the Ocean Bar redesign: “With the new Ocean Bar, we wanted to draw on the qualities that have made travel by sea so enduring, from its sense of elegance and occasion to the connections created along the way.” He added that the venue’s design is inspired by maritime heritage, creating a setting where guests can enjoy cocktails and live music within the line’s signature refined elegance.
Scope of the Evolution Program
The Evolution upgrade initiative represents Holland America Line’s most extensive fleet renovation effort in its 153-year history. The program
will modernize six ships, with the Oosterdam and Zuiderdam leading the sequence. Upgrades focus on public spaces, entertainment venues, and guest experiences to update both aesthetics and functionality across the fleet.
