WestJet is still cancelling flights on August 5, 2026, as it works to restore operations after a flight attendant strike. Data from Cirium showed 16 WestJet flights were cancelled as of 11 a.m. ET on August 4. The previous day, more than 300 flights were cancelled, representing about 62% of the airline’s scheduled flights on August 3.
Strike background and union negotiations
The cancellations followed a strike by WestJet flight attendants, who walked off the job early on August 2 after contract talks stalled. CUPE Local 8125, representing 4,400 flight attendants, had been negotiating with WestJet since January 2026 in Calgary. The dispute centered on
wage increases and claims of unpaid ground work by cabin crew. A tentative agreement was reached early on August 4.
Passenger policies and protections during the disruption
WestJet allowed passengers traveling between July 30 and August 5 to make one-time itinerary changes or cancellations without fees. Passengers affected by delays or cancellations are entitled to refunds or rebooking. Under passenger protection regulations, WestJet must arrange alternate transportation on rival airlines if necessary.
Official statements and recovery efforts
WestJet spokesperson Ashley Tymko said in a statement, “WestJet is resuming operations and entering the recovery phase following a labour disruption.” Tymko added that flights have begun operating again, but cautioned that disruptions would continue
as the airline restores its network and advised passengers to check flight statuses before heading to airports. Union local president Alia Hussain said flight attendants have 30 days from August 4 to ratify the tentative agreement, which includes pay increases.
WestJet faces ongoing challenges in repositioning aircraft and crews while recovering from the labour disruption and flight groundings across much of Canada.
