West Midlands Railway Strike Suspended for Weekend of July 31-August 1, 2026

Two days of strike action planned by TSSA trade union members on West Midlands Railway for the weekend of July 31 and August 1, 2026, have been suspended following additional negotiations. The suspension prevents disruption of train services across multiple routes.

Affected Locations and Routes

The strikes would have impacted services across Birmingham, the Black Country, Wolverhampton, Warwickshire, Shropshire, Herefordshire, Worcestershire, and Staffordshire. Key routes at risk included the Cross City line from Lichfield Trent Valley to Redditch and Bromsgrove, the Wolverhampton to Walsall corridor, and Rugeley Trent Valley to Birmingham International.

Additional services planned for reduced timetables or cancellations encompassed all routes passing

through Birmingham Snow Hill station, the Camp Hill line, Nuneaton to Leamington Spa, as well as Birmingham New Street to Hereford and Shrewsbury.

Strike Background and Previous Action

The planned walkouts stemmed from a dispute over rest day working payments between West Midlands Railway and the TSSA union. Earlier strike action by TSSA members on the same network occurred on July 11 and 12, 2026, which had already led to reduced train services.

Passenger Impact and Official Response

With the suspension of the strike, West Midlands Railway announced it will operate a full service on a normal timetable over the weekend. This decision avoids the previously scheduled reduced timetables and

total cancellations on some routes, ensuring uninterrupted travel for passengers.

Jonny Wiseman, customer experience director at West Midlands Railway, expressed satisfaction with the strike suspension, highlighting it would have caused service disruption affecting customers across the network.
