On September 16, 2026, Xiamen Metro inaugurated two new lines, increasing the network length from 98.4 km to 155.8 km, an expansion of 57.4 km or 37%. These lines are operating under a running-in phase with limited service hours and long headways, during which passenger travel is free of charge.
Line 4 Express Metro Expansion
The initial 31.3 km section of Line 4 opened between Jimei Software Park North and Qianwu. This express metro line operates at a maximum speed of 120 km/h and features extended station intervals, linking major transport hubs across Xiamen. Line 4’s eastern extension, currently under construction, will provide service to
the new Xiang’an International Airport. Additionally, an infill station named Xiyan is planned to be added to the line. A future five-station branch will connect the Xiamen North main line station southwestward to Huizuo / Maluan Bay South.
Line 6 Inter-Urban Metro Linking Xiamen and Zhangzhou
Line 6, covering 26.1 km, is Xiamen’s first inter-urban metro line linking Huaqiao University in Xiamen to Jiaojiang Road in the suburban area of Zhangzhou. It operates as a through service jointly developed and run by the Xiamen and Zhangzhou municipalities. Construction continues on a two-station extension in Zhangzhou and an additional infill station called Chenjing in Xiamen.
Rolling Stock and Operations
Both Line 4 and
Line 6 use four-car B-type trainsets operating fully automatically. The lines draw power from a 1.5 kV DC overhead electrification system. The running-in period applies to both lines, which currently run limited service with longer intervals between trains. Passengers can ride free of charge during this phase.
