Sydney Metro has recorded more than 130 million passenger journeys since city operations began in August 2024, with weekday trips exceeding 291,000. The network supported increased service during major 2026 events including Mardi Gras, the Socceroos’ World Cup matches, and the 23-day Vivid Sydney festival, where Barangaroo station saw its busiest Sunday ever with over 19,100 boardings.

Impact of New Metro Stations on Existing Rail Patronage

The opening of new metro stations has altered travel patterns and reduced patronage at nearby traditional rail stations. After the launch of Victoria Cross metro station, weekday boardings at North Sydney station dropped from 25,400 to 12,200. St Leonards station also saw a

fall from 16,000 to 10,600 following the opening of Crows Nest metro station. These shifts demonstrate a modal transfer from suburban rail to metro services for trips to Sydney’s CBD and North Sydney.

Southwest Metro Extension Nears Operational Readiness

The 13 km Southwest Metro extension from Sydenham to Bankstown is undergoing final testing after closure in 2024 for conversion from the former T3 suburban railway line. Metro Trains Sydney has begun trial running on the extension, completing 22,000 of the required 30,000 train-kilometers and over half the 9,000 mandated testing hours. The opening of this line is planned for the second half of 2026, pending completion

of safety and reliability assessments.

Sydney Metro West Tunneling Complete, Project Progressing Toward 2032 Opening

Construction of Sydney Metro West achieved completion of 24 km of twin tunnels between Westmead and the Sydney CBD by March 2026. The line will include nine stations connecting Westmead to Hunter Street in the CBD, with Hunter Street station providing transfer access to the Martin Place metro precinct and Sydney Trains. The project targets a 2032 opening. It will operate 16 fully automated trainsets supplied by CRRC and double rail capacity between Greater Parramatta and Sydney’s CBD, reducing travel times to approximately 22 minutes.

Western Sydney Airport Metro Tracklaying Finished, First Trains Delivered

The Sydney Metro – Western Sydney Airport line completed tracklaying

along its entire 23 km route in June 2026. Siemens Mobility supplied the first of twelve fully automated three-car metro trains, which arrived in Sydney in July 2026. Designed specifically for airport travel, these trains feature wider aisles, dedicated luggage storage, real-time flight information displays, wheelchair spaces, hearing loops, and bicycle storage. Testing and dynamic commissioning are expected to continue ahead of service commencement.

Sydney Metro’s expansion demonstrates a combined strategy integrating transport infrastructure with urban renewal and accessibility enhancements. Extensive safety and operational testing underpin the planned openings to ensure reliability and customer confidence. When fully operational with the

Southwest extension, Metro West, and Western Sydney Airport line, the system will span 66 km with 31 stations, supporting housing and jobs growth while providing increased transit options for Sydney’s commuters.
