On October 29, 2026, at least 580 flights into and out of the United States experienced delays as of 10:06 a.m. EST, with 53 flights canceled nationwide, FlightAware data showed. Globally, FlightAware recorded more than 8,604 delayed flights and 459 cancellations on the same day.
Airports Affected by Weather Conditions
The Federal Aviation Administration reported low cloud cover as a probable cause of flight disruptions at airports in Austin (AUS), San Antonio (SAT), Seattle (SEA), and the Washington, D.C. area airports including Baltimore-Washington International (BWI), Ronald Reagan Washington National (DCA), and Washington Dulles International (IAD).
Traveler Recommendations to Manage Disruptions
Travel experts and airlines recommended checking flight status regularly through
airline websites or apps. Downloading airline apps to enable notifications for gate changes, delays, and cancellations helps travelers receive timely updates. Travelers with connecting flights should allow extra time when connecting through busy airports. It is advised to keep essential items in carry-on luggage for access during extended delays, and to review airline refund and rebooking policies in advance.
Expert Advice on Handling Cancellations
Eryn Gordon, TedX speaker on ethical and responsible travel, said, “A cancellation feels like chaos, but the travelers who come out of it best treat a disruption as a planning problem rather than an emergency. Screenshot the rebooking policy before you
leave the house.” She also warned, “The trap is thinking speed is everything and grabbing the first seat offered, when that seat can strand you in a connecting airport overnight with your bag on another aircraft.”
