A luxury global cruise operated by Villa Vie Residences aboard the Villa Vie Odyssey ended abruptly on October 28, 2026, leaving passengers stranded in Cambodia. The company cited sharp increases in fuel costs as the primary reason for the unexpected termination and announced temporary accommodation for passengers and crew.
Luxury Cruise Details and Itinerary
The Villa Vie Odyssey departed Belfast, Northern Ireland, two years prior on a continuous round-the-world voyage. The ship, which accommodates up to 650 passengers, offers residential-style monthly rooms priced up to $11,000. Amenities on board include a fitness center, spa, business center, three restaurants, five bars and lounges, and complimentary alcoholic
beverages. The voyage was scheduled to continue from Cambodia to Phu Quoc, Vietnam, then proceed to India, South Africa, Brazil, Australia, and conclude in Gibraltar in August 2030.
Fuel Cost Surge and Financial Impact
Villa Vie Residences reported that monthly fuel expenses per cabin rose from $1,800 to $8,000 in parts of Asia, representing a 344% increase. This drastic rise followed the onset of the Iran war on February 28, 2026. The company stated it could not pass such steep fuel cost increases onto residents, leading to an unsustainable business model under current operations.
Operator’s Response and Restructuring Plans
The operator implemented strategies to lower fuel use by slowing the ship’s
itinerary and extending time spent in ports since the conflict began in late February. Nevertheless, these measures proved insufficient. Villa Vie Residences indicated in an online release that the extraordinary fuel cost hikes require the company to restructure and recapitalize within the next 60 days, adding that “no outcome is assured.” Passengers and crew were disembarked abruptly, with temporary accommodations arranged following the cruise termination.
