The Villa Vie Odyssey, a luxury cruise ship, suspended operations on Tuesday in the Cambodian port city of Sihanoukville citing unsustainable fuel costs, leaving approximately 200 passengers stranded onboard. Passengers were ordered to disembark by 2pm local time after being notified at 6am the same day.
Ship Details and Voyage
Measuring nearly 200 meters in length and capable of accommodating up to 650 passengers, the Villa Vie Odyssey departed Belfast in October 2024. The voyage was planned as a continuous circumnavigation of the globe lasting 3.5 years, with an itinerary covering close to 150 countries. At the time of the suspension, the ship was
over 750 days into its journey.
Fuel Price Surge and Operational Impact
Fuel costs increased sharply following geopolitical tensions earlier this year, with monthly expenses per cabin in parts of Asia rising from $1,800 to as high as $8,000. The operator, US-based Villa Vie Residences, attempted to mitigate fuel consumption by extending port stays and slowing the itinerary, but these efforts failed to offset the unprecedented cost escalation. The company ruled out passing the full fuel cost increase onto residents as an unrealistic option.
Passenger Disembarkation and Reactions
Passengers including Lanette Canen, Johan Bodin, and Holly Hennessey reported being shocked by the vessel’s abrupt suspension. They described emotional farewells onboard
and expressed uncertainty about the future. Residents were placed in various hotels in Sihanoukville as they awaited further instructions. Some opted to disembark early and explore overland travel. Canen and Bodin noted the difficulty of disembarking in Sihanoukville due to its distance from major international airports, as well as their plans to travel through Southeast Asia afterward. Hennessey said she remained hopeful the cruise would resume.
Company Statement and Future Plans
Villa Vie Residences confirmed it is working on disembarkation logistics and temporary living arrangements for passengers. The company plans to undergo a 60-day period focused on restructuring and recapitalisation, without guaranteeing a specific outcome.
Prior to suspension, a potential investor assessed the operation but ultimately did not provide funding.
Cruise Concept and Background
The Villa Vie Odyssey caters to retirees seeking lifetime sea residence, offering cabins priced between $120,000 and $440,000, with rental options starting at $3,500 per month. The voyage had encountered previous delays due to extensive repairs, causing multimillion-pound losses for the operator. In 2024, the company promoted a four-year “Skip Forward” residency package targeting long-term travelers.
Passengers reflected positively on the voyage despite its premature end. Canen and Bodin said, “We loved our two years on Odyssey—the adventures, the places we visited and the friends
we made along the way.” Many planned to continue their community ties on land following disembarkation.
