Major river cruise operators including Avalon Waterways, Viking Cruises, AmaWaterways, Riviera Travel River Cruises, Trafalgar, Scenic, Emerald, and Uniworld Boutique River Cruises have responded by canceling sailings or modifying itineraries. These changes have affected routes primarily on the Rhine and Danube rivers, with adjustments on the Main River as well.
Specific itinerary changes and cancellations
Avalon Waterways cancelled several departures of its Impression ship on July 12, 14, 15, 22, and 23, 2026,
due to its inability to navigate beyond Koblenz, Germany. Avalon also changed the embarkation city for its Legendary Danube Cruise from Nuremberg to Passau and replaced river segments between Vienna and Budapest with bus transfers.
AmaWaterways disembarked passengers from the AmaMagna near Budapest, arranging hotel stays and coach transfers to continue the itinerary by bus to Vienna. Viking Cruises notified guests and travel advisors about modified itineraries and arranged ship swaps and coach transfers on affected stretches of the Danube and Rhine.
Riviera Travel River Cruises did not cancel any cruises but adjusted itineraries to reduce sailing disruptions. Trafalgar continues
scheduled sailings on the Rhine and Danube while proactively informing travel partners of possible itinerary changes on its Trafalgar Verity and Trafalgar Reverie ships.
Scenic and Emerald reported impacts on the upper Danube, including between Regensburg and Passau and near Budapest, as well as sections of the Main and Rhine rivers. Uniworld Boutique River Cruises pledged to maintain high luxury and service standards despite necessary itinerary modifications.
Traveler impacts and company responses
Passengers have experienced cancellations, itinerary shifts including port changes, and ship swaps. Bus transfers replaced some river segments where navigation became unsafe. Companies arranged hotel accommodations when passengers disembarked prematurely. Avalon is offering
affected guests options for refunds or future cruise credits.
U.S. travelers planning European river cruises during this period are advised to confirm sailing status directly with operators due to ongoing navigational challenges on affected rivers.

An Avalon Waterways spokesperson said, “With forecasts showing no sign of improvement, we have made the difficult decision to cancel a small number of upcoming departures.” Viking Cruises stated, “Currently, sections of the Danube and Rhine Rivers are experiencing unusually low water levels […] As a result, select Viking river itineraries may be modified.”
Trafalgar confirmed sailings remain scheduled but emphasized proactive communication with concerned
guests. Scenic and Emerald noted operational adjustments such as transfers to sister ships or changes to embarkation points, with direct contact to affected customers. Uniworld’s Sales & Marketing Manager Divan Viljoen assured passengers they will maintain their luxury service standards despite disruptions.
Lasse Skafte Vestergaard, chief physician at Denmark’s Statens Serum Institut, linked the low water levels and travel disruptions to an extreme heat wave that coincided with at least 14,000 excess deaths in six European countries in June 2026. EuroMomo data recorded 10,680 excess deaths across all EU countries between June 22 and June 28, 2026. Vestergaard commented, “It’s
very plausible that these figures are primarily related to heat. […] There are no other obvious explanations or public health threats currently in Europe that could explain this […].”
