Restored Historic School Campus Hosts Hotel
The hotel occupies the former Fayetteville high school building originally constructed in 1923 and a midcentury middle school structure. Preservation of the original school architecture resulted in unique room sizes and layouts across the 40 guest rooms. The campus incorporates former classrooms and common areas converted into lounges and reading spaces, maintaining the openness and scale of the original buildings.
Patsy’s Restaurant Features Appalachian-Inspired Menu
Located on
the hotel campus, Patsy’s, the signature restaurant named after the founder’s grandmother Pat “Patsy” Phillips Wendell, offers dinner Wednesday through Sunday from 4 to 9 p.m. and brunch on weekends from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Executive Chef Jeffrey Toth, formerly of Wood Iron Eatery in Fayetteville, leads the kitchen alongside Sous Chef Paul Almond. The menu highlights dishes such as Patsy’s Chex Mix, apple molasses-glazed meatloaf with silky potato and bacon, and Clear Water trout. The beverage program includes Old School Ale, an English-style pale ale brewed by Fayetteville’s Bridge Brew Works, and signature cocktails like the gin-based Mae-tini
and the bourbon-forward Peeved Bee.
Design and Local Art Enhance Guest Experience
Mae Pate, Head of Design at Mountain Shore Properties, directed the design of the building, guest rooms, and public areas, integrating the property’s history into material selections and furnishings. Architect of record Aric Margolis of Charleston, West Virginia, and general contractor David E. Looper & Company contributed to the restoration. West Virginia artist Nichole Westfall created a large mural in the hotel’s mural room. The interiors include local artwork, hand-painted signage by designer Jordana Bungard, handmade ceramics, vintage photographs, and other regional elements reflecting the New River Gorge landscape.

Hill Hall offers guests access to
local fitness and outdoor recreation services through partnerships with businesses such as Gripped Fitness, New River Bikes, New River Mountain Guides, and Mountain Surf Paddle Sports. A coworking space managed by Ascend WV is located within the former elementary school building on the hotel campus.
