On September 16, 2026, Xiamen metro initiated limited passenger service on two new metro lines, expanding the network by 57.4 km, or 37%. The total system length increased to 155.8 km from 98.4 km. Passengers can travel free of charge during this informal running-in period, which features limited operating hours and extended headways.

Technical Details of the New Lines

Both new metro lines are fully automated and operate with four-car B-type trainsets. They are powered by 1.5 kV DC overhead electrification. Service on both lines currently involves long headways and restricted service times as part of the ongoing operational readiness phase.

Metro Line 4 Route and Future Extensions

The initial section of Metro

Line 4 spans 31.3 km from Jimei Software Park North to Qianwu. Extensions are underway at both ends of this line. Upon completion, Line 4 will provide a direct connection to Xiang’an International Airport at its eastern terminus, with the future addition of an infill station named Xiyan. A five-station southwest branch from Xiamen North main line station to Huizuo / Maluan Bay South is planned.

Line 4 functions as an express metro with a maximum speed of 120 km/h and larger distances between stations, aimed at linking major transport hubs within the network.

Inter-Urban Connectivity on Line 6

Line 6 extends for 26.1 km

and represents Xiamen’s first inter-urban metro route. It connects Huaqiao University in Xiamen city with Jiaojiang Road in suburban Zhangzhou. Jointly developed and operated by the municipalities of Xiamen and Zhangzhou, Line 6 operates as a through service.

Currently, a two-station extension in Zhangzhou is under construction for Line 6, alongside an infill station called Chenjing within Xiamen city.

Express metro lines like Line 4 and inter-urban lines such as Line 6 reflect broader trends in Chinese urban rail development by improving speed and regional rail integration.
