The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) issued a ground stop at Baltimore Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport (BWI) on Thursday, 20 August 2026, due to severe weather conditions. Tornado and severe thunderstorm watches were issued for the DMV area, which includes Washington D.C., Maryland, and Virginia, prompting the FAA to temporarily halt flight operations at BWI.

Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport (DCA) also had a ground stop earlier on 20 August 2026, but the FAA has since lifted it. Travelers at both BWI and DCA airports experienced ground stops causing delays as flights were paused for safety amid the severe weather

alerts.
