A man fell overboard from the MS Ambition cruise ship on August 21, 2026, during a solar eclipse cruise in the North Sea. The incident occurred between 8:35 AM and 8:55 AM approximately 36 nautical miles east of Arbroath, Angus, or about 40 nautical miles from Anstruther, Fife. MS Ambition was returning from Lerwick, Shetland, to Dundee with around 1,000 passengers on board at the time.

Search and Rescue Operation

Police Scotland, HM Coastguard, the Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre, the Maritime and Coastguard Agency, and lifeboat teams conducted a major search and rescue operation following the report. HM Coastguard deployed aircraft from Prestwick and

Carlisle, while lifeboat crews from Anstruther and Broughty Ferry joined the coordinated effort in the North Sea. The search began soon after the man was discovered missing around 8:55 AM, reacting swiftly to the captain’s report that a passenger was unaccounted for.

Recovery and Identification

The body of the man was recovered later the same day within the search area off the east coast of Scotland. Police Scotland confirmed the recovery but stated that formal identification had not been completed by the time of reporting. The family of the missing individual was notified of the developments.

Passenger Impact and Ship Operations

Passengers aboard MS Ambition were initially instructed

to remain on board during the search operation. Around 11:30 AM, they were permitted to disembark after a comprehensive ship-wide search was carried out upon arrival in Dundee, where the vessel berthed following the operation. The incident delayed the planned turnaround in Dundee, but Ambassador Cruise Line advised that guests scheduled to board MS Ambition for subsequent departures should proceed to the port as scheduled. After disembarkation, MS Ambition departed Dundee later on August 21, 2026, heading toward Newcastle.

Official Statements and Protocols

Police Scotland stated: “Around 8.55am on Friday, 21 August, 2026, we received a report that a man had gone overboard from

a cruise ship in the North Sea, 40 nautical miles from Anstruther, Fife. A search and rescue operation, carried out by police and partner agencies, has been ongoing, and a body has been recovered. Formal identification is yet to take place; however, the family of the man who was reported missing has been informed.”

An Ambassador Cruise Line spokesperson said the captain reported the missing person incident early that morning during the voyage. The company said: “Guests on board have been kept informed of developments by the captain, and a thorough ship-wide search was carried out on arrival in Dundee.”

They added that Ambassador follows stringent search and rescue protocols aligned with international maritime safety standards and that cooperation continues with all relevant agencies, including the Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre (MRCC), Maritime and Coastguard Agency, HM Coastguard, and Police Scotland.
