Exceptionally low water levels in the Rhine and Danube rivers throughout Germany, Austria, and Romania have disrupted European river cruises in 2026. Record-breaking heatwave and drought conditions have led to cancellations and major itinerary changes among leading operators.

Impact on Viking River Cruises

Viking, which operates the largest river fleet in Europe, reported that over 50% of their European river cruise sailing days between mid-July and mid-August 2026 were affected by low water levels. Passenger cancellations on these affected itineraries ranged from 10% to 12%. Some Viking vessels ran aground, including an incident on the Bulgarian Danube in late July where guests and crew were

safely evacuated ashore.

Adjustment Strategies by Major Cruise Lines

Instead of widespread cancellations, AmaWaterways and Viking have employed measures such as itinerary adjustments, motorcoach transfers, port reordering, and ship swaps involving identical sister vessels sailing in opposite directions. AmaWaterways adapted a late July 2026 itinerary originally planned from Amsterdam by ending the cruise in Basel instead, skipping Brussels and Bruges. Passengers, including a Melbourne couple, were bused to Strasbourg and visited alternative destinations such as Luxembourg and Baden-Baden. According to AmaWaterways ANZ Head of Marketing Angela Smith, the company hosted a Mega Famil from 2 to 9 August with more than 100 Australian and New Zealand

travel advisors, requiring coach transfers during part of the Budapest to Vilshofen Danube itinerary.

Emerald Cruises cancelled at least two Danube sailings due to the low water conditions. One Australian couple reported that their Emerald Cruises river trip was cancelled mid-holiday, and they received credit valid for 24 months, but faced a gap in their seven-week journey.

Operational Challenges and Port Accessibility

Low water levels prevented some ships from accessing key river ports like Budapest, resulting in passengers disembarking away from city centers and continuing their journey by bus. Viking’s operational expertise and ownership of over 100 premier docking locations have allowed it to manage

these challenges with ship swaps and rerouting to minimize disruptions. AmaWaterways stated that most shore experiences proceeded as planned despite the adjustments.

Cruise Line Statements and Passenger Experiences

Angela Smith of AmaWaterways said, “Rather than cancelling cruises, our focus is on adapting. Every decision is made with our guests’ comfort, safety and overall experience in mind.” A Viking spokesperson emphasized proactive communication, stating, “Viking Customer Relations is proactively notifying guests and their travel advisors prior to departure if the guests’ itinerary may be affected.”

Passengers affected by itinerary changes expressed mixed feelings. A Melbourne couple on an AmaWaterways cruise said, “We were very disappointed that we

didn’t see Brussels or Bruges, but AmaWaterways did an excellent job of providing us with an alternative itinerary. We recovered from our initial disappointment and greatly enjoyed the cruise. All destinations were a new experience for us and were enchanting.” Viking has offered future-cruise discount vouchers for bookings made for 2026, 2027, and 2028 to address customer dissatisfaction.

Environmental Causes and Context

The 2026 heatwave and drought in Europe are more severe and arrived earlier than similar low water events in 2018 and 2022. Low Alpine snowmelt and reduced rainfall have significantly diminished river flows, exposing underwater obstructions including rocks, sandbars, wartime bombs, and

prehistoric mammoth bones along the Danube. Shallow water levels usually expected in August have been evident since early July 2026, severely impacting navigation for river vessels.

Travelers on European river cruises in 2026 should expect potential disruptions such as cancellations, itinerary modifications, alternative transportation, or ship swaps due to these unprecedented environmental conditions.
