A man was reported missing after falling overboard from the Ambassador Cruise Lines vessel MS Ambition in the North Sea off the east coast of Scotland at 08:35 on Friday, 21 August 2026. The incident occurred approximately 36 nautical miles from Arbroath.
Search and Rescue Operation Involving Multiple Agencies
The search and rescue response included lifeboats from Anstruther and Broughty Ferry, coastguard teams from Dundee, Arbroath, and St Andrews, coastguard aircraft from Prestwick and Carlisle, and a commercial search and rescue helicopter. The coordinated operation began shortly after a report was received by Police Scotland at 08:55.
Recovery of Body and Impact on Passengers
The body of the man was recovered during the ongoing
search and rescue mission. Formal identification was pending at the time of reporting, but the family had been informed. Passengers onboard the MS Ambition were initially delayed from disembarking, but they were allowed to leave the ship around 11:30 after the completion of initial search activities. The cruise ship subsequently docked at Dundee port.

The MS Ambition had been on a solar eclipse cruise, which included stops in Iceland, the Faroe Islands, and Lerwick before returning to Dundee. After the incident, the ship departed from Dundee to Newcastle on the evening of 21 August 2026. The MS Ambition was previously
chartered by the Scottish government to provide temporary accommodation for Ukrainian refugees.
