American Airlines announced it will begin three new international nonstop routes from Philadelphia International Airport in 2027. Flights to Porto, Portugal will start on March 28, Vienna, Austria on May 6, and Reykjavik, Iceland on May 27. The Porto and Vienna routes will be operated using Airbus A321XLR aircraft, while the Reykjavik route will use an Airbus A321neo.
Passenger Volumes and Service Growth at Philadelphia Airport
American Airlines carried over 20 million passengers through Philadelphia International Airport in 2025, accounting for nearly 70% of total airport passenger traffic. Frontier Airlines is the second largest carrier at Philadelphia, with around 3 million passengers in 2025. The airline increased its
flights from Philadelphia by 10% in the summer of 2026 compared to the previous summer.
Background on Route Delays and New European Destinations
The Reykjavik route was initially announced in 2019 but was postponed due to pandemic travel restrictions. The flight to Porto required government approval before becoming operational. In addition to these new routes, American has recently added service from Philadelphia to Copenhagen, Denmark; Nice, France; and Naples, Italy, while reinstating flights to Budapest, Hungary and Prague, Czech Republic.
