American Airlines will inaugurate three new international routes from Philadelphia International Airport in 2027. Flights to Porto, Portugal, will start on March 28, Vienna, Austria, on May 6, and Reykjavik, Iceland, on May 27. The Porto and Vienna services will operate with Airbus A321XLR aircraft, while flights to Reykjavik will use an Airbus A321neo.
Ticket sales for these new transatlantic flights begin on August 31, 2026. Once launched, American Airlines will offer 21 transatlantic routes out of Philadelphia, solidifying its position as the airport’s dominant carrier by passenger volume.
In 2025, American Airlines transported more than 20 million passengers through
Philadelphia International Airport, accounting for nearly 70% of the airport’s total traffic. Frontier Airlines ranks as the second-largest carrier at Philadelphia, carrying about 3 million passengers in that year. American Airlines increased its flight operations from Philadelphia by 10% during the summer of 2026 compared to the prior summer. Cesar Marchese, the airline’s vice president of operations in Philadelphia, noted the city has “a much bigger footprint when it comes to leisure summer travel.”
American Airlines has also recently expanded or reinstated routes from Philadelphia to other European cities. These include newly added direct flights to Copenhagen, Denmark; Nice, France;
and Naples, Italy, as well as restored service to Budapest, Hungary, and Prague, Czech Republic.
The Reykjavik route was initially announced in 2019 but delayed due to pandemic-related travel restrictions, while the Porto service required government approval after its announcement earlier in 2026. These new routes enhance American Airlines’ growing European network from Philadelphia.
