American Airlines will begin operating three new nonstop international routes from Philadelphia International Airport in 2027 to Porto, Portugal; Vienna, Austria; and Reykjavik, Iceland. Flights to Porto will start on March 28, 2027, Vienna service will launch May 6, 2027, and the Reykjavik route will begin May 27, 2027. The airline will use Airbus A321XLR aircraft for the Porto and Vienna routes, while the Reykjavik service will deploy Airbus A321neo jets.
Ticket Sales and Passenger Volumes
Tickets for the new Philadelphia routes went on sale August 31, 2026. Once operational, American Airlines will operate 21 transatlantic services from Philadelphia. In 2025, American carried more than
20 million passengers through Philadelphia International Airport, accounting for nearly 70% of total passenger traffic at the airport. Frontier Airlines, the second largest carrier at Philadelphia, transported approximately 3 million passengers that year.
Network Expansion and Capacity Growth
American Airlines has expanded its European service from Philadelphia in recent years by adding flights to Copenhagen, Nice, and Naples, and reinstating routes to Budapest and Prague. The airline increased its flight capacity through Philadelphia by 10% during the summer of 2026 compared to the previous summer. Cesar Marchese, American Airlines’ vice president of operations in Philadelphia, highlighted that the airport “has a much bigger footprint when
it comes to leisure summer travel” compared to other U.S. gateways like New York’s JFK.
Route Background and Approvals
The Reykjavik route was originally announced in 2019 but was delayed due to travel restrictions during the COVID-19 pandemic. The launch of flights to Porto required government approval before American Airlines could commence operations.
American’s Market Presence at Philadelphia
American Airlines remains the dominant carrier at Philadelphia International Airport with a substantial share of passenger traffic. Its ongoing route additions and increased capacity reflect a strategic emphasis on the leisure travel market from this hub.
