Alberta and the Canadian federal government are collaborating on a feasibility study for a high-speed rail link connecting Calgary, Airdrie, Red Deer, and Edmonton. The provincial government plans to launch a formal Request for Proposal (RFP) in fall 2026, inviting private-sector companies to present designs and plans. The winning proponent is expected to be selected by April 2027.
Project Scope and Operational Goals
The rail line is proposed to run along the Calgary-Red Deer-Edmonton corridor with potential stops in up to seven locations, including Airdrie and Red Deer. Trains would accommodate between 400 and 700 passengers each and aim to complete trips between downtown Calgary
and Edmonton in about 90 minutes. The project requires integration with existing passenger rail networks in both Calgary and Edmonton, while minimizing financial contributions from Alberta’s provincial government.
Governance, Consultations, and Federal Review
Following proponent selection, the project will be reviewed by the federal Major Projects Office. Alberta and Ottawa will create a joint governance structure to oversee exploration efforts and define next steps. The initiative involves consultations with Indigenous groups, municipalities, industry representatives, investors, stakeholders, and members of the public to assess market interest and implementation feasibility.
Official Statements on Project Impact
Alberta Premier Danielle Smith described the rail connection as “a generational investment in Alberta’s future” that will
strengthen one of Canada’s fastest-growing economic corridors. Smith emphasized the project’s design to require “minimal financial investment by the provincial government” and support mobility and economic growth. Federal Minister Eleanor Olszewski characterized the initiative as an example of “dreaming big and working together,” highlighting potential job creation and business opportunities in Canada’s third-largest transportation corridor.
Strategic Context within Alberta’s Passenger Rail Master Plan
This high-speed rail study is part of Alberta’s broader Passenger Rail Master Plan, which aims to enhance passenger rail services to stimulate growth, mobility, and economic development within the Calgary-Edmonton corridor. The corridor is recognized as a critical link for supporting the province’s expanding population
and economy.
Project timelines beyond the RFP launch and proponent selection phases are not yet defined. Costs, funding sources, technology choices, and construction schedules remain unconfirmed. The governments are focusing currently on feasibility, planning, and market assessment before any construction commitment.
