A trackside fire near Clapham Junction on Sunday, 27 September 2026 damaged signalling equipment on the railway between Clapham Junction and London Victoria. The fire has caused widespread disruption, delaying and cancelling trains in and out of London Victoria station.
Disruption Extends Across Southern, Gatwick Express, Thameslink, and London Underground Services
The fire affected Southern and Gatwick Express trains on the route between Clapham Junction and London Victoria. Services are facing cancellations, up to 60-minute delays, diversions, and revisions. Thameslink routes operating between Sutton and Kentish Town, West Hampstead Thameslink, St Albans City, and Luton also experienced delays.
The Victoria line of the London Underground encountered severe delays due to a
signal failure at Brixton on 28 September. The Northern line faced partial suspension between Edgware and Camden Town caused by a passenger illness. Earlier, the District line suffered severe delays between Tower Hill and Upminster after a fire alert at Plaistow but later resumed normal service.
Schedule Impact and Expected Service Restoration
Up to 20 train routes were cancelled between 10:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. on Monday, 28 September 2026. An extremely reduced train service has operated to and from London Victoria, with delays of up to 60 minutes possible on affected routes. Southern Rail announced plans to restore normal service between London Victoria and Eastbourne/Ore
from 4:24 p.m. on 28 September. Disruption and emergency engineering repairs affecting the signalling system are anticipated to continue until at least 4 p.m.
Ticket Acceptance and Alternative Transport Arrangements
Passengers holding tickets for Gatwick Express and Southern can use their tickets without extra charge on alternative routes, including London Underground and London Overground services. London Buses, C2C, and the Docklands Light Railway (DLR) are permitting ticket holders to travel via any reasonable route during the disruption. Travelers have been advised to allow an additional 60 minutes for journeys involving London Victoria.
Official Responses and Ongoing Repairs
Southern and Gatwick Express stated: “On Sunday, 27 September, there was a fire next
to the track in the Clapham Junction area. The fire caused damage to the signalling equipment on the route and repairs are ongoing. As a result, trains between Clapham Junction and London Victoria may be cancelled, delayed by up to 60 minutes, diverted or revised.” National Rail has warned that major disruption is expected to persist throughout 28 September as emergency engineering works continue overnight and into the day.
Travel Chaos Affecting Airport Connections and Major Routes
Gatwick Express services between London Victoria and Gatwick Airport, as well as Brighton, have been suspended or cancelled. This has impacted travel arrangements for passengers connecting to Gatwick Airport. Services from
London Victoria to destinations including Brighton, Bognor Regis, and Ore have also faced cancellations and delays. The disruption has contributed to significant travel challenges across London’s rail network on 28 September 2026.
