Albania recorded a 6.2% increase in foreign tourist arrivals during the first half of 2026, with 5 million visitors arriving between January and June, compared to 4.8 million in the same period of 2025. In June 2026 alone, the country received 1.35 million foreign tourists, up from 1.33 million in June 2025, according to data released by INSTAT, Albania’s official statistics office.
Tourist Origins and Market Declines in June 2026
Southern Europe accounted for the majority of foreign visitors, contributing 71.9% of total arrivals, while Western Europe represented 9.3%. However, arrivals from specific countries declined in June 2026 compared to June 2025. Kosova reported 51,190 fewer tourists, North
Macedonia 15,223 fewer, Germany 13,165 fewer, Turkey 11,062 fewer, and Montenegro 6,212 fewer. These five markets combined experienced a drop of 96,852 visitors, corresponding to an approximate 13% contraction in those nationalities for the month.
Protests Cited as Cause for Decline by Albanian Officials
The Albanian government and Minister of Tourism, Culture, and Sports Blendi Gonxhja linked the June declines to negative perceptions triggered by protests that began on May 30, 2026 and continued throughout the reporting period. Officials emphasized that concerns over security, stability, and normality influenced tourists’ and international partners’ decisions, contributing to lower arrivals from certain neighboring and European markets.
Minister Gonxhja indicated that the protests
and the consequent image projected abroad have impacted tourist flows. He noted signals from tour operators, hoteliers, and travel agencies reporting slowed bookings, cancellations, and hesitation from some foreign markets. Despite this, social media and tourism forums have not treated the protests as a significant risk factor.
Growth from Other Markets and Tourism Context
While arrivals from certain countries decreased in June 2026, growth from other international markets offset these losses, keeping first-half arrivals up. This compensated for shortfalls and maintained a positive net increase in foreign tourism.
INSTAT data shows Albania’s total foreign tourist arrivals increased by 6.6% in 2025 to 12.47 million visitors for the
whole year. The country’s estimated population in 2023 was 2.4 million. The tourism sector in 2026 remains susceptible to shifts in political stability and security perceptions linked to recent events.
Operational Impact on Tourism Businesses
Tour operators, hoteliers, and travel agencies in Albania reported a slowdown in bookings and increased cancellations as a result of uncertainties tied to the protests and their international perception. The hesitation from some foreign source markets has been noted as impacting business activity during this period.
