A 44-year-old female passenger was rescued early on Saturday, October 10, 2026, after spending nearly 20 hours in the Ionian Sea approximately 70 nautical miles southwest of Zakynthos Island, Greece. Authorities were alerted early on Friday, October 9, to an overboard incident involving a passenger from a cruise ship sailing nearby.
Multi-Agency Search Leads to Passenger Recovery
The rescue operation involved the Hellenic Coast Guard, Greek Air Force helicopter units, and several merchant vessels. The woman, found conscious and wearing a lifebelt equipped with a flashing light, was spotted by the crew of a merchant ship participating in the search. She was then recovered by a
Coast Guard vessel and given first aid onboard.
Incident Involving Odyssey of the Seas Leads to Itinerary Change
The passenger fell overboard from Odyssey of the Seas, a Bahamas-flagged QUANTUM ULTRA class cruise ship operated by Royal Caribbean International, with a capacity of approximately 4,200 passengers. The ship was en route from Mykonos to Naples when the incident occurred. Odyssey of the Seas spent several hours circling the search area, forcing the cancellation of its scheduled port call at Naples. The vessel later adjusted its itinerary to recover lost time and completed its voyage at Civitavecchia, Rome.
Passenger’s Condition and Official Statements
After rescue, the woman was transported to Katakolon in western Peloponnese and then
taken to a hospital in Pyrgos for medical observation and further testing. A local prosecutor ordered a psychiatric evaluation as part of her medical assessment. The Greek Coast Guard spokesperson stated, “She was 20 hours at sea” and added the woman informed rescuers that “she wanted to disembark” from the cruise ship, which reportedly led to her voluntary jump into the sea.
