Southeastern Railway cancelled multiple train services on 3 October 2026 after bedbugs were detected in the drivers’ cabs of two trains. The insects were initially spotted on 22 September 2026, prompting a suspension of affected services to allow for inspection and cleaning.

Affected Locations and Routes

The affected trains were based at the West Marina Depot in Hastings, East Sussex, the terminus for trains from London. Southeastern operates train services through Kent, East Sussex, and Greater London, with routes including stops at Battle, Tunbridge Wells, and Sevenoaks.

Infestation Details and Passenger Safety Measures

Bedbug infestations were confined to the drivers’ cabs in two Southeastern trains. Passenger carriages on these trains

remained locked and isolated to separate them from the affected cabs. No bedbugs were found in any passenger areas, and none were detected on Southeastern’s High Speed 1 trains.

Official Response and Service Impact

Southeastern confirmed that the trains only remained in service while returning to a suitable location for inspection and treatment. Oly Turner, head of drivers at Southeastern, said, “Cases have been contained to the drivers’ cabs in only two of our trains and no bed bugs have been identified in areas for passengers.” He added, “When we receive reports such as these we check trains thoroughly before they are put back into

service when given the all clear.” Turner also stated, “We have a great relationship with our drivers, who have helped hugely in cooperating with us over these isolated incidents.”

The rail operator emphasized that “trains and stations are cleaned thoroughly so passengers can travel safely and with confidence.” Multiple Southeastern train services were cancelled, with affected trains removed from service to undergo cleaning at West Marina Depot before returning to operation.
