A signalling fault at Manchester Piccadilly station occurred at 06:06 BST on June 2024, rendering platform 8 unusable until at least 10:00 BST. Network Rail identified a cabling issue as the cause of the disruption, which affected multiple train services to, from, and through the station.

Service Cancellations on Avanti West Coast and Northern Routes

Avanti West Coast cancelled four services between Manchester Piccadilly and London Euston. The affected trains included the 06:02 and 06:23 departures from Piccadilly to London and the 09:13 and 10:13 departures from London Euston to Manchester. Northern cancelled services operating between Piccadilly and Hazel Grove, and between Piccadilly and Alderley Edge. Other Northern routes

departing from Piccadilly continued to run normally.

Alternative Travel Options for Passengers

Passengers holding Northern tickets were permitted to travel on Avanti West Coast trains between Manchester Piccadilly and Wilmslow. Additionally, Northern tickets were accepted on the Bee Network 192 bus service connecting Manchester and Hazel Grove. Alternative Northern routes toward Buxton and Crewe via Stockport remained available for travellers. Passengers were advised to verify their journey details before travelling.

Network Rail Response and Apology

Clare Waller, Network Rail’s area director for Manchester, issued an apology for the disruption and confirmed that teams were working hard to resolve the fault and restore full service at Manchester Piccadilly. The signalling fault

caused by the cabling problem specifically affected platform 8, preventing train movements on that platform during the disruption period.
