Foreign tourist arrivals in Albania increased by 5.3% year-on-year during the first eight months of 2026, totaling 9,443,700 visitors, according to data released by INSTAT, the Albanian statistical office.
August 2026 recorded approximately 2.43 million foreign visitors, marking a 2% increase compared to 2.38 million in August 2025. This growth rate for August is the lowest recorded since the pandemic, indicating a slowdown in monthly tourism expansion despite reaching record visitor numbers for the month.
Tourist Behavior and Accommodation Trends
In 2026, tourists in Albania have shown behavioral changes including shorter stays. There has been a rising preference for private apartments, homes, and self-catering accommodation
options where visitors purchase groceries and prepare their own meals.
Additionally, European tourists have exhibited more cautious spending patterns and a tendency toward last-minute bookings. These trends have impacted the tourism sector’s revenue generation despite increased visitor numbers.
Season Outlook and Industry Perspectives
Tourism operators estimate that the remainder of 2026 will maintain growth rates similar to those seen in 2025, with the tourist season extending through early October. Guaranteed contracts for 2027 in terms of volume and revenue have increased, which operators view positively for the industry’s outlook.
Interest from Polish, Czech, and French tourist groups continues, supporting ongoing international demand for Albania as
a destination.

Albania welcomed 12.47 million foreign tourists in 2025, representing a 6.6% increase over the previous year. The country’s population was estimated at 2.4 million in 2023, highlighting a significant tourism-to-population visitor ratio.
INSTAT has ceased publishing data on tourists’ countries of origin due to inconsistencies found in government-supplied figures. Despite this, the agency’s overall foreign arrival statistics remain a key indicator of tourism performance.
