China’s tourism and cultural industry achieved record summer performance in August 2024 with 1.12 billion domestic trips and tourism revenue exceeding 1.55 trillion yuan, according to statistics from the Ministry of Culture and Tourism of China. This performance forms part of the 2024 August Asia (China) Cultural and Tourism Industry Development Report, highlighting robust market demand supported by visa policy enhancements.
Visa Facilitation Policies Expand, Transport Usage Peaks
The 240-hour transit visa-free policy was extended on August 20, 2024, to include Kyrgyzstan and Vietnam, who also obtained 30-day visa-free entry to Hainan for ordinary passport holders. The transit visa-free scheme now encompasses 57 countries, while Hainan’s visa-free
policy covers 61 countries. These adjustments aim to stimulate cross-border tourism. During the summer travel period, China’s national railways carried 954 million passengers, while civil aviation transported 151 million, underscoring heavy travel activity.
Outbound and Inbound Tourism Booking Surges
Outbound tourism booking volumes from China showed strong growth in August 2024, with Thailand, South Korea, Malaysia, and Singapore as favored destinations. Inbound tourism booking volumes increased more than six times year-on-year, reflecting the ongoing impact of visa facilitation policies. China sustained its position as the largest outbound market to neighboring Asian countries and remained Vietnam’s top source of international tourists for the first eight months of
2024.
Personnel Changes in Major Cultural Tourism Enterprises
Nine cultural tourism companies in China experienced considerable management restructuring in August 2024. Notable appointments and removals include Three Gorges Tourism appointing Lu Jianguo as Chief Financial Officer on August 3, replacing Chen Jingjing. Longyan Cultural Tourism Huijin Development Group appointed Huang Jinhuo as Vice Chairman and General Manager on August 11.
