Background and Market Significance
Before this
launch, travelers between Colombo and Australia had to transit through a third country, increasing costs and travel time. Victoria hosts the largest Sri Lankan community in Australia, creating strong demand for direct flights. The new route fills a long-standing gap by offering year-round widebody capacity between the two nations, also enabling onward connections to Sydney, Brisbane, Gold Coast, Tasmania, Auckland, and Queenstown via Jetstar’s network.
Aircraft Upgrades and Flight Capability
Jetstar’s Boeing 787 Dreamliner fleet servicing this route is undergoing cabin upgrades in 2026. Enhancements include doubling business class seats, adding Wi-Fi for streaming entertainment to passengers’ devices, and a new lie-flat crew rest area.
These features support flights of up to 16 hours, allowing for extended long-haul services in the future.
