Australian carrier Jetstar inaugurated its first direct low-fares flight service between Sri Lanka and Australia on Tuesday, 25 August 2026. The inaugural flight landed at Bandaranaike International Airport in Colombo that evening, followed shortly by the first departure from Colombo to Melbourne.
Jetstar operates the Colombo to Melbourne route three times weekly on a year-round basis. The service offers more than 100,000 low-fare seats annually between the two cities. Promotional one-way fares begin at LKR 67,770, available for purchase from 7:30 AM IST on 25 August until 9:29 PM on 31 August 2026, subject to availability.
The airline deploys its
fleet of 11 widebody Boeing 787 Dreamliner aircraft on this route. Jetstar has started upgrading these planes with a full cabin overhaul, enhancing both economy and business class. The refit includes doubling the number of business class seats and adding Wi-Fi to enable in-flight streaming entertainment. Additionally, a new lie-flat crew rest area allows flights of up to 16 hours, expanding future long-haul options.
Background and Route Significance
Before this new service, travelers between Colombo and Australia required connecting flights through a third country, often at higher costs. Jetstar’s three weekly widebody flights on a stable year-round schedule close that long-standing gap in direct
air capacity. The route improves affordable access for Sri Lankans visiting Victoria—the Australian state home to the largest Sri Lankan community—and enables onward connections to Sydney, Brisbane, the Gold Coast, Tasmania, Auckland, and Queenstown through Jetstar’s extensive domestic network.
Shano Sabar, Deputy Managing Director of Hayleys Advantis, the General Sales Agent for Jetstar in Sri Lanka, said the service also opens a large outbound leisure market for Sri Lanka while providing consistent inbound tourism capacity. “As Jetstar’s General Sales Agent here, our role is to support the route commercially and operationally so that it performs in both directions,” he stated.
