United Airlines will begin four weekly nonstop flights between Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) and Ibiza Airport (IBZ) starting May 31, 2027. The seasonal service is set to run through October 7, 2027, offering new direct access from the New York metropolitan area to the Spanish island.
Aircraft and Seasonal Schedule
The airline will deploy its Airbus A321XLR aircraft for the route, a long-range single-aisle jet with a premium-heavy cabin. The configuration includes 32 premium seats, featuring 20 United Polaris suites with privacy doors and 12 Premium Plus seats. Flights from Newark to Ibiza will operate on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays, while return
flights from Ibiza to Newark will run Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Fridays, and Sundays. Ibiza departures begin on June 1, 2027, with the last service on October 8, 2027.
Route Significance and Exclusivity
This new route marks the first scheduled nonstop air service between the United States and Ibiza, with United Airlines being the sole U.S. carrier offering such service. Previously, travelers from the U.S. had to connect through European hubs like Madrid, Barcelona, London, or Paris before reaching Ibiza. The direct flight eliminates these connections, enhancing travel convenience and reducing overall journey time.
Market Growth and Traveler Benefits
Ibiza’s tourism authorities report that the U.S. visitor market grew over 21%
in May 2026 compared to May 2025, and North American visitors made up about 5.2% of international tourists during the April to October 2025 period. The number of online searches for Ibiza from the U.S. exceeded 4.9 million in the first half of 2026. The direct flights allow travelers from across the U.S. to connect via Newark, facilitating access to Ibiza and enabling potential short-duration and weekend trips that were previously less viable.
Background and Strategic Goals
Before this launch, U.S. travelers had no direct flight options to Ibiza, necessitating transfers through European airports. This route aligns with Ibiza’s strategic tourism goals to attract
more American visitors. Juan Miguel Costa, director of Ibiza tourism, has emphasized the importance of the U.S. market and highlighted American interest in the island’s culture and gastronomy. The Ibiza and Formentera Hotel Federation has welcomed the new connection as a gateway for travelers from the Americas.
United Airlines’ 2027 International Expansion
This route is part of United Airlines’ largest international expansion in its history, introducing 10 new international destinations in 2027. Besides Ibiza, new routes from Newark include Valencia, Marseille, Terceira, Ljubljana, Olbia, Catania, and Luxembourg. Other expansions include San Francisco to Okinawa and Washington Dulles to Toulouse. United has added 58 international routes
since 2017 and now serves over 160 destinations outside the U.S.
Operations and Ticketing
Flights on the Newark-Ibiza route require government approvals and tickets are available for purchase on United Airlines’ website and mobile app. The seasonal service corresponds with Ibiza’s peak tourist period from late May through early October. Days of operation for Newark departures and Ibiza returns are set, allowing passengers to plan travel during the island’s core summer months.
