Norwegian Cruise Line’s Pride of America returned early to Honolulu, Hawaii on 14 August 2026 at 7:00 a.m. amid approaching Tropical Storm Lala, which is forecasted to strengthen into a Category 1 hurricane before reaching the Hawaiian Islands.

Pride of America Adjusts Itinerary for Safety

The 2,180-passenger Pride of America originally departed Honolulu on 8 August 2026 for a 7-night inter-island cruise. The ship cut short its visit at Nawiliwili on Kauai, departing nearly a day earlier at 6:30 p.m. on 13 August instead of the scheduled 5:30 p.m. on 14 August. This allowed Pride of America to head directly back to Honolulu to avoid the storm’s

impact.

Passenger Disembarkation and Accommodation Options

Disembarkation at Honolulu, initially set for 15 August, was postponed to 16 August 2026. Passengers were offered two options: disembark early on 14 August upon the ship’s arrival in Honolulu or remain aboard until the official disembarkation two days later. Norwegian Cruise Line recommended three hotels for guests needing extended stays: Hilton Garden Inn Waikiki Beach, Hilton Waikiki Beach Resort and Spa, and Embassy Suites By Hilton Waikiki Beach Walk.

Safety Measures and Ship Positioning During the Storm

To avoid damage from storm surges and heavy swells during Tropical Storm Lala, Pride of America will move to deeper waters outside Honolulu Harbour starting at 5:00 p.m. local

time on 14 August. The ship will stay offshore until the port reopens, when it will return for passenger disembarkation. Norwegian Cruise Line stated this maneuver is standard for tropical storms, allowing vessels room to safely maneuver without risking damage to dock infrastructure.

Impact on Subsequent Cruise Itinerary

The following 7-night cruise set to begin on 15 August will be delayed by one day due to the postponed disembarkation. This delay affects embarkation schedules and port calls, including a missed visit to Maui on 16 August. Passengers booked on that sailing have been notified, with itinerary adjustments expected to maintain the value of their cruise

experience.

US-Flagged Status Enables Hawaiian Inter-Island Service

Pride of America is the only major cruise ship operating exclusively within Hawaiian waters year-round due to its US-flagged status and predominantly American crew. This classification allows the ship to offer 7-night itineraries visiting multiple Hawaiian islands without foreign port calls, complying with the Passenger Vessel Services Act.

Official Weather Warnings and Port Conditions

As of the evening of 13 August 2026, the US Coast Guard issued Condition X-Ray warnings for nearly all Hawaiian ports, indicating gale-force winds are expected within 48 hours. Port Allen and Nawiliwili Harbour remain at Condition Whiskey, with gale-force winds anticipated within 72 hours. The National Hurricane Centre, operated by

NOAA, reported Tropical Storm Lala approximately 620 miles east-southeast of Hilo on the Big Island, moving west-northwest at 10 mph toward Hawaii.

Norwegian Cruise Line Communications and Industry Practices

Norwegian Cruise Line informed passengers via letter about the tropical storm and resulting schedule changes. The cruise line highlighted the potential for Port of Honolulu closure and emphasized prioritizing safety by moving vessels to open waters during severe weather. The company’s approach and passenger options reflect standard cruise industry practices when tropical storms threaten itineraries.

“A developing tropical storm in the Central Pacific, southeast of the Hawaiian Islands, is expected to bring strong winds and challenging conditions to

the region, resulting in the potential closure of the Port of Honolulu,” Norwegian Cruise Line stated.
