Carnival Cruise Line announced on August 17, 2026, the cancellation of all mainland shore excursions in Mexico, affecting thousands of passengers scheduled to participate. The cancellations apply solely to tours on the Mexican mainland and do not include any ship itinerary changes or cruise cancellations.
Details on Cancelled and Continuing Excursions
The cancelled mainland tours include visits to the ancient Mayan ruins at Tulum, snorkeling excursions, and trips to Xplor Park, a destination known for activities like ziplining and exploring underground rivers. In contrast, excursions that remain confined to the island of Cozumel are still operating as planned. Guests who had booked the cancelled mainland tours
will receive full refunds for those excursions.
Safety Advisories and Carnival’s Monitoring
John Heald, Carnival Cruise Line’s brand ambassador, confirmed the cancellations, citing ongoing monitoring of U.S. State Department travel advisories. Heald stated, “We continue to monitor the U.S. State Department’s travel advisory regarding the current situation in certain parts of Mexico’s mainland. While there are no specific threats in the state of Quintana Roo, we have made the decision to cancel tours going to the mainland.”
He advised guests to exercise standard personal safety measures when ashore and to remain within well-traveled tourist areas. He added, “We urge guests to be aware of their
surroundings, follow instructions provided by local officials, stay within well-traveled tourist areas, and pay close attention to updates and announcements while ashore.”
Passenger Reactions and Concerns
The announcement has prompted concerns among some cruise passengers planning future trips to Mexico. Online forums reflect mixed feelings, with some guests expressing hesitation to proceed with scheduled cruises due to security alerts and unrest in Mexican mainland states. For example, one passenger shared concerns about traveling to Mexican ports including Cozumel and Yucatán, questioning whether to delay or cancel the trip.
Other cruisers responded that Carnival would alter itineraries if the destinations were unsafe. Passengers currently docked
in Cozumel have not faced cancellations but are encouraged to remain cautious during shore visits.
Background on Unrest and Industry Impact
The cancellations follow ongoing unrest and security concerns in multiple Mexican states, including Jalisco, Baja California, Nayarit, Colima, and others, as noted by security alerts from the U.S. Embassy and Consulate in Mexico. Although Quintana Roo, where Cozumel is located, currently reports no specific threats, Carnival is taking a precautionary approach to mainland tours.
The cruise industry is also adjusting schedules due to unrelated events. Royal Caribbean’s ship Odyssey Of The Seas, cruising on the U.S. East Coast at 21.8 knots toward Port Canaveral, has
made changes after an East Coast winter storm, separate from the Mexico mainland situation.
