The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) issued ground stops on August 6, 2026, at nine airports across the Northeastern United States due to severe weather conditions. Thunderstorms with potential damaging wind gusts are expected in the region during the afternoon and evening, prompting the FAA to act to limit air traffic.
Flight cancellations and delays concentrated at New York and Newark airports
Flight disruptions began on August 5, 2026, with LaGuardia Airport reporting the highest number of cancellations among all U.S. airports. On August 5, LaGuardia had 37 departures and 27 arrivals cancelled. Early on August 6, cancellations at LaGuardia increased to 43 flights. Newark Liberty International Airport recorded 27 cancellations on
August 5, ranking it second nationwide. These cancellations coincide with extensive air traffic delays, including some lasting nearly three hours.
Delta Air Lines announces rebooking options and fee waivers
Delta Air Lines has communicated that it is offering rebooking options at nine affected Northeastern hubs for flights scheduled on August 6 and 7, 2026. Customers who reissue tickets by August 10, 2026, will have change fees waived provided they maintain the same cabin of service and destination. Delta’s policy states, “When rebooked travel occurs on or before August 10, 2026 in the same cabin of service as originally booked, the fare difference will be waived. A fare difference may
apply when the waiver is class to class restrictive and the original booking class is not maintained in the rebooked itinerary.”
Delays at LaGuardia tied to air traffic and staffing shortages
Travelers at LaGuardia faced notable delays unrelated to weather as well. Delta flight DL2396 from LaGuardia to Palm Beach International was delayed due to staffing shortages, operating with only one pilot available. Passengers reported delays of over two hours on flights such as Indianapolis to LaGuardia, attributed to air traffic congestion. Traveler Mark Haubry posted on X, “A typical flight from #Indy to @LGAairport is delayed over 2 hours due to air traffic.” Similarly, Rudi Bester noted delays were
exacerbated by pilot shortages, stating, “Now @Delta – which only has one pilot – further delays LGA – PBI because they can’t find a pilot for DL2396.”
Delta and JetBlue among carriers affected by Northeast weather
Delta Air Lines and JetBlue, with significant operations in New York and Boston hubs, are facing the brunt of the disruptions caused by the anticipated thunderstorms. The airline industry expects continued delays and cancellations in the Northeast region. In anticipation, Delta has prepared a “NYC cancel package” to address the expected air traffic control delays. An anonymous aviation expert noted, “Delta: a NYC cancel package is in the works for tomorrow. The company
is expecting weather conditions to drive significant ATC delays in NYC Thursday.”
