The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has imposed ground stops at nine airports in the U.S. Northeast on August 6, 2026, in response to severe weather conditions. Delta Air Lines issued passenger warnings and rebooking offers covering those hubs as flight delays and cancellations escalate across the region.
Cancellations Predominate at LaGuardia and Newark Airports
LaGuardia Airport led U.S. airports with 43 flight cancellations early Thursday morning. On the previous day, Wednesday, LaGuardia recorded 37 departure and 27 arrival cancellations. Newark Liberty International Airport registered the second highest cancellations in the U.S. on Wednesday with 27 flights canceled. These disruptions are expected to worsen as thunderstorms move through
New York and New Jersey in the afternoon and evening hours.
Severe Weather Drives FAA Ground Stops and Airline Delays
Forecasts predict thunderstorms with possible damaging wind gusts across the Northeast, particularly in New York and New Jersey, prompting FAA to implement ground stops to control air traffic safely. Delta Air Lines and JetBlue are notably affected due to their high flight volumes in New York City and Boston. Early operational challenges on August 5 included air traffic control delays and staff shortages at LaGuardia Airport, contributing to cascading disruptions.
Delta Air Lines Customers Face Delays and Receive Rebooking Flexibility
Passengers traveling through the nine affected Northeast hubs, including major New York airports, are encountering flight delays and cancellations.
Delta customers experienced flight delays exceeding two hours, including a flight on August 5 delayed from Indianapolis to LaGuardia due to air traffic congestion. Additionally, flight DL2396 was delayed because the airline had only one pilot available. Delta has waived change fees for rebooking flights on or before August 10, 2026, if the new travel is booked in the same cabin and to the same destination.
Official Statements and Passenger Accounts Highlight Operational Challenges
Delta Air Lines stated, “When rebooked travel occurs on or before August 10, 2026 in the same cabin of service as originally booked, the fare difference will be waived. A fare difference may apply
when the waiver is class to class restrictive and the original booking class is not maintained in the rebooked itinerary.” Aviation expert JonNYC noted on social media, “Delta: a NYC cancel package is in the works for tomorrow. The company is expecting weather conditions to drive significant ATC delays in NYC Thursday.” Passengers Mark Haubry and Rudi Bester reported lengthy delays caused by air traffic issues and pilot shortages respectively, underscoring the disruption’s impact on travelers at key Northeast airports.
