The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) implemented ground stops today, August 6, 2026, at nine major airports across the Northeastern United States due to severe weather conditions. The FAA’s action comes as thunderstorms with potential damaging wind gusts are forecast to impact New York and New Jersey throughout Thursday afternoon and evening.

Cancellations and Delays Concentrated at LaGuardia and Newark

Flight cancellations and delays have already started at key hubs in the region. LaGuardia Airport (LGA) in New York recorded 37 departure and 27 arrival cancellations on Wednesday. By early Thursday morning, cancellations at LaGuardia increased to 43, the highest among all U.S. airports. Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR)

in New Jersey registered 27 cancellations on Wednesday, ranking second nationwide.

Delta Air Lines Issues Warnings and Offers Rebooking Flexibility

Delta Air Lines, one of the largest carriers in the Northeastern hubs, alerted customers to expect significant delays and cancellations related to the FAA’s ground stops and the severe weather. Delta’s rebooking policy waives change fees for flights scheduled on August 6 and 7, 2026, at nine Northeast airports. Tickets must be reissued by August 10, 2026, for travel in the same cabin of service to avoid fare differences.

According to Delta, “When rebooked travel occurs on or before August 10, 2026, in the same cabin of service as

originally booked, the fare difference will be waived. A fare difference may apply when the waiver is class to class restrictive and the original booking class is not maintained in the rebooked itinerary.”

Thunderstorms and Staffing Issues Drive Operational Disruptions

The FAA’s ground stops follow forecasts of thunderstorms with damaging wind gusts across the Northeast, especially in New York and New Jersey. Aviation expert JonNYC noted on social media that airlines, including Delta, anticipate major air traffic control (ATC) delays in the NYC area on August 6.

Operational challenges have also stemmed from staffing shortages. A Delta flight, DL2396, departing LaGuardia was delayed due to the lack

of a second pilot, as reported by a passenger on social media. Other delays at LaGuardia on Wednesday resulted from air traffic control issues, with some flights delayed more than two hours.

Passenger Experiences Detail Impact of Disruptions

Travelers have reported lengthy delays in addition to cancellation difficulties. Passenger Mark Haubry tweeted that his flight from Indianapolis to LaGuardia was delayed over two hours due to air traffic, unrelated to weather on Wednesday. Another passenger, Rudi Bester, indicated a Delta flight from LaGuardia to Palm Beach was delayed due to insufficient pilot staffing.

Aviation expert JonNYC summarized Delta’s situation: “Delta: a NYC cancel package is in

the works for tomorrow. The company is expecting weather conditions to drive significant ATC delays in NYC Thursday.”

Travelers Face Continued Delays and Should Use Rebooking Options

With ongoing weather disturbances forecast throughout the afternoon and evening, flight cancellations and delays are expected to persist. Delta’s waiver allowing change fee-free rebooking applies at nine Northeast airports for flights on August 6 and 7, with ticket changes valid through August 10. This policy covers travel in the originally booked cabin; differences may apply if the booking class changes.

Passengers impacted by delays at major Northeastern airports are advised to consider rebooking options with Delta and expect multi-hour delays caused by

both weather and operational constraints.
