On July 28, 2026, Berlin-based Luna Rail and Finnish experiential train operator Reissujuna announced a strategic partnership to introduce a next-generation night train service in Finland. The service will operate Finnish overnight routes between Helsinki and northern regions using Luna Rail’s patent-pending modular compartment concept.
Company Backgrounds and Fleet Expansion
Luna Rail, founded in Berlin in 2023 by Anton Dubrau and Hendrik Lucka, specializes in flexible night train vehicle design. Reissujuna, operated by Suomen Elämysjunat, is an adventure train initiative that runs themed and event-driven journeys. Reissujuna recently expanded its rolling stock by acquiring Höyryraide Oy in January 2026, increasing its total fleet to 25
coaches and four locomotives.
Innovative Train Design and Passenger Experience
Luna Rail developed a flexible cabin concept allowing vehicles to serve as premium inter-city transport by day and convert into overnight accommodations at night. To optimize capacity, comfort, and privacy, Luna Rail constructed full-scale mock-ups used in user testing involving hundreds of participants. The company is also developing an integrated mobile application for booking, ticket validation, travel updates, cabin door access, and onboard food ordering.
Route Focus and Market Demand
The initial focus for the night train service is routes connecting Helsinki with Lapland (Lappi) in northern Finland. Demand for overnight services in this region is robust, with existing services often
selling out months ahead during winter seasons. Reissujuna’s founder and CEO Robert Ramstedt has identified northern Finland as one of Europe’s fastest growing tourist regions and an ideal setting for advancing overnight rail travel.
Following the acquisition of Höyryraide Oy, Reissujuna faced regulatory challenges when Traficom revoked Höyryraide’s safety certificate in spring 2026. The operator is currently seeking a new safety certification to restore operational rights for the expanded fleet.
Reissujuna is actively pursuing strategic and financial investors to support its growth plans amid these developments. Both companies emphasize that the collaboration marks Luna Rail’s first commercial project, aiming to
contribute to a wider night train renaissance across Europe and eventually link Nordic night train routes with continental services.
