Xiamen Metro started limited passenger operations with free travel on two new lines on September 16, 2026. These lines add 57.4 km, increasing the network length by 37% to 155.8 km from the previous 98.4 km.
Network and Operations Details
Both newly opened lines employ fully automated operation, using four-car B-type trainsets powered by 1.5 kV DC overhead electrification. Service schedules currently include long headways and restricted operating hours as the metro transitions through an informal running-in phase.
Line 4 Route and Features
Line 4 commenced service over an initial 31.3 km stretch from Jimei Software Park North to Qianwu, with extensions under construction at both termini. The eastern
extension will provide access to the Xiang’an International Airport, which is itself still being developed. A future infill station named Xiyan is planned along Line 4.
The line will also feature a five-station branch running southwest from Xiamen North main line station towards Huizuo and Maluan Bay South. Line 4 operates with a maximum speed of 120 km/h and longer station spacing, classifying it as an express metro line intended to connect major transport hubs within the area.
Line 6 and Inter-City Connectivity
Line 6 spans 26.1 km and is Xiamen’s first inter-urban metro route. It links Huaqiao University in Xiamen to Jiaojiang Road in
the suburban area of neighbouring Zhangzhou city. The service is a through operation jointly developed and managed by the municipalities of Xiamen and Zhangzhou.
Construction is ongoing for a two-station extension in Zhangzhou and an infill station at Chenjing in Xiamen, enhancing Line 6’s reach within the metropolitan region.
