Chicago O’Hare International Airport experienced over 600 flight cancellations and more than 1,000 arrival and departure delays on July 3, the highest by any airport worldwide that day. Thunderstorms forced diversions of flights initially bound for Chicago-area airports, including American Airlines flight 836, which departed Charlotte 7.5 hours late and was then diverted to Minneapolis due to the storms. Kansas City International Airport also received multiple diverted flights that otherwise would have landed at Chicago. Regional carriers SkyWest and GoJet Airlines, operating United Express flights, encountered cancellations exceeding United Airlines’ rates.

The National Weather Service issued flood warnings and severe weather advisories for the Chicago region, effective from 1:51 AM to noon on July 4. Up to 2.5 inches
of rain fell during the initial storms. AccuWeather forecasted continued thunderstorms linked to a heat dome across the Midwest and Northeast over the Independence Day weekend, warning of a “ring of fire” effect producing waves of severe thunderstorms. Additional storm threats were expected along the southern Atlantic and Gulf Coasts, potentially leading to tropical storm formation.
Passenger Impact and Reports of Extended Delays
Travelers at Chicago faced long tarmac delays, with some flights held for over two hours before returning to gates. As of 6:30 AM local time on July 4, FlightAware reported 85 canceled and 57 delayed United flights at the airport. Passengers expressed frustration on
social media, including a Reddit post stating a United flight was canceled until the following morning despite hours on the tarmac. Similar delays have been previously experienced at Denver International Airport and Orlando International Airport, with baggage claim delays causing distress.
Official Statements on Passenger Rights and Airport Enforcement
A Virgin Atlantic spokesperson denied claims that airline staff threatened passengers with arrest at Orlando International Airport if they left U.S. customs without their bags, clarifying that customs enforcement is solely under U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) jurisdiction. GOAA also rejected such allegations. CBP stated delays stemmed from extended waits for checked baggage affecting entry processing but affirmed
their officers were present and operational.

However, cash refunds for cancellations are limited.
