A recent analysis by the World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC) indicates that Europe’s tourism could face significant challenges if delays linked to the Schengen Entry/Exit System (EES) reach three hours. The council highlights the potential loss of as many as 41 million visitor arrivals across Schengen borders in Europe under such circumstances.

The introduction of the EES affects border control procedures within the Schengen area, aiming to enhance security and visitor registration. However, the WTTC’s findings point to a threshold where three-hour processing delays at EU borders could result in considerable disruption to travel plans and visitor flows.

This

situation raises concerns about the possibility of long wait times for travelers entering or exiting the Schengen zone, which could, in turn, impact tourism revenues across various European destinations. The WTTC emphasizes the importance of addressing the operational challenges associated with EES implementation to avoid these potential setbacks.
