WestJet flight attendants began a strike early morning on Sunday, August 2, 2026, after negotiations with the union over a tentative agreement collapsed. The airline had already begun winding down operations on Friday, July 31, leading to hundreds of cancellations before the strike commenced. An estimated 250,000 passengers have been affected by these cancellations linked to the strike, causing widespread travel disruptions across Canada.

Phenix Family’s Rebooking Struggles

Mike and Ashton Phenix from Okotoks, Alberta, experienced significant difficulties trying to rebook their flights. Their original trip to Barcelona, Spain, had flights cancelled multiple times. After paying additional fees to rebook for a flight scheduled

the day before the strike, WestJet cancelled that flight as well. Ashton Phenix spent a total of 19 hours on hold with WestJet customer service in two separate calls—6.5 hours followed by 12.5 hours. Their final itinerary to Barcelona included two added layovers. Mike Phenix described feeling powerless when being pushed to accept a WestJet flight scheduled within 48 hours of the strike, a practice to comply with Air Passenger Protection Regulations. The family estimates at least $2,000 in lost costs from rebooking and non-refundable hotel stays.

Other Passengers Stranded at Pearson and Beyond

At Toronto Pearson International Airport, WestJet passenger Iman Abdelkhalek was stranded with her

six-month-old son after a last-minute flight cancellation to Nashville, Tennessee. Unable to get through to customer service by phone, she arrived at the airport seeking assistance but found no resolution. Her mother, teacher Rola Subhie, also stuck at Pearson, faces pressure to return to work by Monday after missing days off due to the cancellations. Multiple passengers report call wait times exceeding six hours, with some unable to reach agents entirely either by phone or in person at airports.

Passenger Advocate Urges Alternate Bookings for Timely Travel

Gábor Lukács, founder of Air Passenger Rights, criticized WestJet’s rebooking attempts for failing to meet legal requirements under Canadian regulations. He

said the airline often rebooks passengers beyond the mandatory 48-hour window and sometimes on flights that get cancelled again. Lukács advises passengers to purchase tickets from other airlines if WestJet does not respond within three hours of cancellation, emphasizing that travelers can seek reimbursement from WestJet after completing their trips.

Passenger Awarded Self-Rebooking Due to Failed WestJet Service

Sarah Ann, whose flight to Seattle, Washington, was cancelled and rebooked on another WestJet flight that was also cancelled, faced long hold times when trying to retrieve assistance. After waiting on hold for six hours and 45 minutes starting at 3 a.m. and subsequent failed contact attempts, she purchased a

separate ticket with Alaska Airlines. Despite incurring nearly $1,000 in new ticket costs, she awaits reimbursement from WestJet.

Passengers are experiencing financial losses, missed vacations, and lost workdays due to cancellations and inadequate rebooking. Ashton Phenix described the ordeal as “three days of holding and lost vacation, lost bookings, and (it’s) very, very disappointing.”

Mike Phenix added, “I feel like we have no power,” highlighting the airline’s focus on regulatory compliance over customer service during rebookings. Iman Abdelkhalek expressed frustration, stating, “I just feel like it came out of nowhere… now we’re stranded here and basically don’t know what to

do with no one to talk (to).” Rola Subhie emphasized work obligations, saying, “I’m a teacher and I took days off from school, so I have to go back tomorrow because I should go back to school. I can’t miss another day from school.”
