The Villa Vie Odyssey luxury round-the-world cruise has abruptly ended in Cambodia, leaving passengers stranded after the voyage was cut short because of skyrocketing fuel costs. The residential cruise, which marketed itself as a permanent home at sea, had been underway continuously for two years since departing Belfast, Northern Ireland.

Cruise Capacity, Pricing, and Itinerary Before Termination

The ship, operated by U.S.-based Villa Vie Residences, can accommodate up to 650 passengers. Monthly room rates on the cruise reach as high as $11,000. The vessel was scheduled to arrive in Phu Quoc, Vietnam, later in the week before continuing to destinations including India, South Africa, Brazil, and Australia,

with a planned docking in Gibraltar set for August 2030.

Fuel Cost Surge Linked to Iran War Forces Early Termination

Villa Vie Residences reported a 344% rise in monthly fuel costs per cabin in parts of Asia, escalating from $1,800 to $8,000. This surge is associated with events following the outset of the Iran war on February 28. Despite efforts to reduce fuel consumption—such as slowing the itinerary and extending port stays—these measures were insufficient to offset the increased fuel expenses. The company cited the inability to transfer these substantial cost increases onto residents as a factor making the current operation financially unsustainable.

Operator Statements and Passenger Impact

In a statement, Villa Vie Residences said,

“Extraordinary increases in fuel costs meant the company would need to restructure and recapitalize its business over the next 60 days.” The company added, “No outcome is assured.” Passengers and crew are being disembarked in Cambodia, where temporary accommodations are being arranged following the unexpected end to the cruise. The cruise included amenities such as a fitness center, spa, business center, three restaurants, five bars, lounges, and complimentary alcoholic beverages.
